Jena 6

http://www.blacklegalvoice.com/

I just learned about this case being tried in Louisiana referred to as the Jena 6. Click the link above and read "Jena 6 Injustice." It gives a synopsis of what happened.

I knew racism existed in America today, but I was still very shocked after learning of the Jena 6. I'm shocked because it's hard to believe that there are still people and TOWNS in the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA that act like it's the 1950's or 40's and practice flatout segregation and racism. This trial is not To Kill A Mockingbird - there is no Atticus Finch. This is ACTUALLY happening in this country.

I don't understand how the white residents in the town can just dismiss the hanging of three nooses as "child's play" when they must understand what a noose represents to African Americans. The kid who was beaten up got bruised up but was able to attend a function that very same day. And to charge the justifiably angry teenagers of attempted murder for a mere battery.. It's ridiculous. Clearly, we've been underestimating the extent to which racism is still engrained and institutionalized in our society.
A lot of people in our school wore black today to show their support, as did I. I'm glad this case is getting some publicity at last.
